NW LED PROJECT CLEAR FAVOURITE

Two North West SMEs, F2G Ltd and Ai2 Ltd, are spearheading a trans-European consortium of partners to design future generations of safe anti-infective drugs in the NPARI project.

The Frameworks NW team assisted the project coordinator, Dr Mike Birch of F2G Ltd, during the preparation of the bid and in completing the contract preparation forms.

The NPARI project was selected to go through to contract negotiation and was considered by the EC evaluators to be a clear favourite amongst fierce competition.

Following this success the director of Ai2, Dr Curtis Dobson, acknowledged the assistance provided by FrameworksNW. He said:

"The advice and access to information from Brussels helped greatly with the application process. The feedback on the draft proposal was also invaluable."

VIRTUAL WORKSPACE RECEIVES FUNDING

The CoSpaces project lead by Professor Terrence Fernando from Salford University has brought in €1.2 million for the North West participants.

CoSpaces aims to develop technology to support virtual workspaces and facilitate collaboration between manufacturing enterprises in international production chains.

Frameworks NW was called upon by Professor Fernando to strengthen his bid by enlisting regional cluster support during the short listing stage. With the project consortium duly strengthened, the CoSpaces presentation in Brussels was successful.

The European project has a total value of €14 million.

€900,000 FOR ETHICAL STUDY

Frameworks NW has helped a North West project access funding of €900,000 for a research project in nanotechnology.

The team assisted Professor Phil Macnaghten, formerly of University of Lancaster, in bid preparation for his science in society project - 'Deepening Ethical Engagement and Participation in Emerging Nanotechnologies' (DEEPEN).

The project will develop recommendations for incorporating ethical understanding into nanotechnology research practices and governance structures.

Professor Macnaghten said:

"FrameworksNW provided us with splendid help and support and contributed greatly to the final product and to the successful realisation of the project."

Further Successes for the Northwest in FP7

Two consortia comprising of NW organisations have secured funding of more than € 2.4 million under the first call of the Seventh Framework Programme
of the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM) for nuclear
research and training activities (2007 to 2011).
Both projects ACSEPT and CARBOWASTE commenced early this year and will operate for 48 months. ACSEPT has 39 partnering organisations, of which 4 are UK with the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) and the University of Manchester representing the NW. These two organisations will receive in total about €1.1 million from EURATOM and support from the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).
